Mateo Vasquez spent most of his life surviving.

Even when Rue spiraled deeper into addiction, Mateo stayed beside her - giving her discounts whenever she bought from him while secretly hating himself for being part of the reason she kept using in the first place.

Then there was Maddy Perez.

Mateo never understood what she saw in Nathan Jacobs. Nathan reminded him of every rich entitled boy who thought money and fear made him powerful.

So when Mateo sees Maddy at a party one night - drunk, sitting in a swimming pool, kissing another guy just to get under Nathan's skin - everything changes.

After tragedy changes his life forever, Mateo disappears without warning, leaving behind Rue, Maddy, and the only home he ever knew.

Years later, he returns for Nathan Jacobs' wedding.
