RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner launched by the Cunard Line in 1906 as a Royal Mail Ship. She was the world's largest passenger ship until the completion of her sister Mauretania three months later. In 1907, she gained the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, which had been held by German ships for a decade. During her 202nd crossing on May 7th 1915, Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast by the German submarine U20. The sinking caused the deaths of 1,197 people, including 128 Americans. The disaster was one of many reasons for the United States entering World War 1 in 1917.
