In the academy, control is everything.

Recruits are trained to obey, to calculate, to survive - not to feel.

Feelings are considered instability. Attachment is classified as a risk factor. And deviation from protocol is dealt with quietly.

Jade Mercer has always been exceptional at not deviating.

Until Kai.

Kai is the academy's most controlled asset - precise, disciplined, unreadable. The kind of person who never hesitates because hesitation doesn't exist in his system.

But Jade makes him hesitate.

Not in obvious ways. Not in ways that can be reported easily.

In patterns. In timing. In instinct.

And the academy notices patterns.

It always does.

When a security breach forces a recruit to attempt escape, the system responds instantly - and Jade is forced to confront something she has always ignored:
