His voice was barely audible, filled with a raw vulnerability that she rarely heard. He held her tighter, as if trying to shield her from the darkness within him. "Because some things are too dark for your innocent heart to bear." He paused, his breath hitching slightly.
"A-Are you going to leave me?" Her voice trembles with fear.
He immediately pulled back to look at her, his eyes flashing with a fierce protectiveness that was almost frightening. "Leave you?" He repeated the word like it tasted bitter in his mouth. "Never. Not in this lifetime or the next. You're mine... forever."
"Why cant you let me see the real you?" She whispers softly.
He stared at her for a long moment, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. Slowly, he brought her hand to his chest, pressing it over his heart. "Because the real me is dangerous, baby. The real me would scare you so fucking much."
She looks at him, and pulls him close. "You saw the real me.. now it time for me to see yours."
His breath caught in his throat, her acceptance and desire to know the real him almost bringing him to his knees. Slowly, he pulled back to look at her, his eyes filled with fear and love. "You might not recognize me..." He warned softly.
"I don't care, please I want to know , tell me everything." She begs softly while looking up at him.
He searched her eyes, looking for any hint of fear or hesitation. When he found none, something inside him snapped. Gently, he pushed her back against the pillows, his body hovering over hers. "You want the truth? You want to know what I've been hiding?"
"Yes.." Her voice trembles with fear and anxiety.
His eyes-once haunted and pleading-went flat and empty. "I tried, angel." His voice lost all warmth, becoming smooth and sharp like a blade. "I tried to be your white knight. But you married a devil."
