The compound had no name on any map, though everyone in the outer districts knew it existed. Beyond the polluted coastlines and the sleepless megacities, past miles of electrified fencing and white salt flats, its towers rose like polished bones against the horizon. Officially, it was a biomedical research facility funded by the Directorate's public wellness initiative. Unofficially, it was where the future of obedience was being engineered. The old methods - fear, deprivation, violence - had become inefficient in an age where entire populations could broadcast their suffering in real time. Pain created resistance. Terror created martyrs. But pleasure? Pleasure dissolved people quietly, from the inside out. Volunteers arrived at the compound every day. Some came for money, others for curiosity, addiction, or the promise of transcendence whispered through underground networks. Inside the sterile labyrinth of observation chambers, they were connected to intricate machines designed not to punish the body, but to understand it completely. Soft restraints held them still while articulated devices mapped every vulnerable nerve and erogenous response with clinical precision. Sensors threaded across skin and scalp monitored pulse, hormonal fluctuations, micro-expressions, and neural activity in real time, feeding oceans of data into learning systems buried deep beneath the facility. The Directorate's scientists were searching for the perfect stimulus - the exact sequence of sensations capable of overriding fear, ambition, even identity itself. And with every willing participant who entered the compound smiling, they moved closer to discovering it. What if The Lost Hero was the end of the series? What if Percy never made it back to Camp HalfBlood and stayed at the Roman camp? Gaea and her Giants never woke up? In this story, Annabeth finds Percy again in New York, 13 years after The Son of Neptune Does Percy remember her? What does he remember? This is going to be a lot about Percy and Annabeth reconnecting, in the beginning. Disclaimer: I own none of these lovely characters, all of those rights go to the brilliant Rick Riordan, or Rich Roman according to his autocorrect.
