I count her breaths when she is near. I memorize the way her lower lip catches between her teeth when she reads. The vein at her wrist that pulses like a trapped bird when I stand too close.

He is the bruise I am forbidden to touch. It is wrong. It is twisted. We are carved from the same grief, wearing the labels of forbidden terms like armor we can't take off.
