On an ordinary Friday night in her dorm room at Aldenmoor University, Emmy Calloway is doing what she always does - avoiding her psychology textbook, eating chips that belong to someone else, and trying very hard not to think too carefully about Julian Hartwell. Julian is her best friend. Has been for five years. He is quiet where she is loud, careful where she is impulsive, and the one person in her life she has never quite been able to categorize. She has tried. She keeps failing. Then Julian excuses himself to the bathroom, and everything changes. He comes back different. Comprehensively, impossibly, undeniably different - same dark eyes, same careful mind, same dry wit that Emmy has been cataloguing for years - but inhabiting a body that the universe has apparently decided, without consultation, should be female. No explanation. No warning. No way to undo it, or at least no way either of them can find. What follows is not the story of a crisis. It is the story of two people who have been in love with each other for years without quite admitting it, suddenly finding that all the careful distances they kept have quietly ceased to apply. Emmy has always been the person Julian turned to. Now she has to reckon with what she is to him - and what he has always been to her. Juliet is only beginning to discover who she is. But she knows, with the certainty of someone who has spent years watching Emmy Calloway from a desk chair in a fairy-lit room, exactly who she wants to spend that discovery with. The Nearest Heart is a story about identity, transformation, and the specific courage it takes to stop managing love from a safe distance and let it be what it is. It is also, occasionally, about sports bras.

The sixteen-year-old pianist Xenja is suffering from selective mutism which keeps her from talking to people outside of her family. This made finding friends almost impossible for her and being alone constantly made her fall into depression. The spoiled eighteen-year-old Stevie had to move in with her grandparents and now has to adapt to a very poor and limited lifestyle. SHe had dreamt of taking piano lessons for a long time but doesn't have money to do so. When both Xenja's mother and Stevie's grandparents ask the school for help with their situations, Xenja giving Stevie free piano lessons seems to be the solution that kills two birds with one stone. But sometimes things aren't as easy as they might seem...
