"You know what's strange?" Astrid whispered, her shoulder pressing harder against the fabric of the couch. "I think you're more dangerous than Klaus."
Elijah stilled completely.
His hands remained folded, but the steady calm in his chest tightened into a sharp, focused pressure.
"Everyone who watched your story thinks Klaus is the monster because he lashes out," Astrid continued quietly. "They fear Kol because he's visibly unstable, and they fear Finn because of how severe he can be. We know they will resort to violence because it's right on the surface."
She took a slow step forward, her fingers brushing the edge of the table.
"But you..." she whispered. "You hide yourself. Behind your suits. Your manners. Your promises." Her sea-green eyes lifted to meet his.
"You even hide behind that red door in your mind."
For the first time since entering the cottage, Elijah Mikaelson looked genuinely unsettled.
"People trust you because you look controlled," Astrid whispered with exhausting honesty. "They believe the illusion of your nobility. But I think that makes you impossible to predict. You are the hardest to trust because you make people believe they are safe right before you do what is necessary."
