The world outside is a minefield, crawling with infected and worse things hiding between the ruins. So when one of the creatures finds her alone, she prepares to be torn apart. But instead of killing her, he becomes fixated on her.
He's unlike the other infected roaming the wasteland: stronger, smarter in some ways, disturbingly human in others. He doesn't speak. Doesn't behave like a human would. Yet for reasons she doesn't understand, he becomes attached to her.
And as dangerous roads, starving survivors, and endless hordes close in around them, she decides to use his unnatural attachment to survive the journey to find another settlement. But the farther they travel together, the harder it becomes to tell where fear ends and trust begins.
