Long before the events of the movie, Henry was caught in a supernatural storm while sailing with his family across distant waters far beyond the Pacific islands. The ocean itself carried him away, protecting him during the disaster.

Days later, fishermen from Motunui discovered him unconscious along the shore after the sea gently pushed him onto the sand. The villagers believed the ocean had chosen him for a reason.

While most people were unsure about the strange foreign boy, Gramma Tala immediately sensed something special within him. She understood that the ocean had brought Henry to Motunui as part of a greater destiny connected to Moana and the fading heart of Te Fiti.

Tala raised him alongside the people of Motunui, teaching him their stories, navigation traditions, and respect for the ocean. Even though Henry never fully felt like he belonged anywhere, Tala constantly reminded him:

"The ocean doesn't make mistakes."
