In 9045, a strange fever began to spread. It was gentle, almost forgettable. A warmth that came and went, nothing to fear. Then people started dying. Not loudly. Just quietly, wave after wave, until their bodies gave out. The world scrambled for a cure, and when it came, it was a miracle: a simple white capsule stamped with a red triangle. Everyone swallowed it. The plague ended. The celebrations were deafening.

Then the summers grew hotter. Year after year, the heat climbed, and nobody thought much of it. Until one afternoon, a twelve-year-old girl carrying oranges collapsed in the street. She wasn't sick. She wasn't dying. She was becoming something else, something that had waited inside her since the day she took the cure.
