The Devil of Blackmere The Continent knew him as many things. Lord Isaac Blackwood. The Midnight Duke. The Shadow of the North. To the dowager countesses who received his annual charitable donations, he was a gentleman of impeccable breeding. To the orphans who found warm meals and new boots left anonymously on their doorsteps, he was a ghost who cared. To the merchants who dealt honestly, he was fair-almost generous. But to those who crossed him? They disappeared. Not dramatically. Not with spectacle. Just... gone. A carriage that never reached its destination. A country manor that burned to ash in the night, no survivors, no cause determined. A name erased from every ledger, every lip, every memory that mattered. By the winter of 1762, parents in five kingdoms used Isaac Blackwood's name to frighten their children into obedience. "Go to sleep, or the Duke will come." And the children slept. He was thirty-four years old, devastatingly handsome in that sharp, ageless way, with dark hair that never seemed to fall out of place and grey eyes that could warm to charcoal or freeze to steel. He bowed to women. He offered his arm to the elderly. He knelt to speak with children at eye level. He had never married. Never courted. Never so much as glanced at a woman with anything other than polite disinterest. "There is no room in my life for such things," he would say, and smile, and everyone would nod as if they understood. No one understood.

Valeria didn't rush. She never did. Inez was pinned beneath her, wrist locked overhead, the hold precise and impersonal. Not pain. Control. Inez scoffed anyway. "That's it?" she sneered. "I've had tutors scarier than you." Valeria said nothing. The silence pressed in. "You don't scare me," Inez added, louder. Brattier. "You just-" "Enough." One word. Flat. Final. Valeria lifted Inez's chin with two fingers, detached as a correction. "Look at me," she said coolly. "If you're going to embarrass yourself, do it properly." Inez laughed, brittle. "You think this makes you powerful?" "I don't think," Valeria replied. "I decide." Her gaze never wavered. "You provoke because it's the last control you have." "I don't belong to you," Inez snapped. Valeria leaned in, voice razor-thin. "You are my wife. You belong to consequences." She released her grip. "Say it." "No." Valeria waited. The quiet broke Inez, she hated being ignored. "...I'll behave, I'll be a good girl" Inez muttered. "Specify." Inez swallowed hard. "...I'll be your good girl" Valeria stepped back, already distant. "Good," she said. "Remember why." #1 older women-13th February (FAST PACE BOOK)
