Y/n, eight, crossed the hedge between their estates every day to bother Jungkook, seventeen, who let her boss him around because her laugh did something to him no title ever could.

That evening, her mother called her home. She hugged him tight before running off. "Don't go anywhere. Wait for me. Promise?"

"I promise."

It was the last thing he ever said to her. Her family's car exploded that night. No survivors.

One tear fell down Jungkook's face - the last he allowed himself for ten years.

Jeon Jungkook, twenty-seven, future mafia king, unmarried and untouchable, accepted a dinner invite from Marcus - his family's rival.

Midway through the meal, a girl entered with dessert, eyes on the floor. Something about her stopped his glass halfway to his mouth.

She glanced up. Their eyes met.

*Those eyes.*

Then her hand shook - dessert spilled on Marcus's shirt. He slapped her down without hesitation.

"Useless. Get out."

She fled.

Jungkook's voice came out steady. "Who is she?"

"My wife," Marcus said, bored.

Under the table, Jungkook's fist went white.

*She's dead. You stood at the funeral.*

But he'd just watched a stranger flinch exactly the way y/n used to.

For the first time in ten years, he didn't know what to believe.
