Chase has always known how to hold himself steady.
As the leader of Adventure Bay's rescue team, he runs the perimeter first, checks the fence posts twice, and fills every quiet hour before the quiet can find him. He is warm, capable, and completely fine - and he has been completely fine for longer than he can remember.
When Ryder arranges a family visit that brings the whole team's loved ones to the Lookout, Chase is genuinely glad. Glad for Marshall's dad, who fills every room he enters. Glad for Zuma's brothers and their surfboards and their chaos. Glad for his mom, steady as she has always been, and for Bella - four years old and already mapping the whole yard by the second afternoon.
But the visit also brings Skye's sister Luna. And it brings Skye herself, closer than the distance they have always carefully maintained. And somewhere between the copper afternoons on the cliff and the amber lights along the south fence and the conversations that happen when two dogs have run out of reasons to keep their distance - Chase begins to understand that carrying things quietly and being strong are not the same thing.
