The first book in the series about Joachim Myasnikov.

Every child in the Soviet Union dreamed of becoming a cosmonaut. The country had leaped forward, and space had drawn closer. But this is not the Soviet Union we remember - it is the one we never got to have. This is the world of Joachim Myasnikov, a cadet at an elite Soviet pilot training center. Like everyone else, he lives for a single dream: to become a cosmonaut. He dreams, he argues with his friends about the future, he falls in love for the first time, he feels the weight of the system. His life seems like an ordinary story of a Soviet boy.

But one day he wakes up aboard a spaceship. He doesn't remember how long the flight has lasted, he can't reach Earth, he can't take control. And an encounter with an uninvited guest will make him question everything he believed to be true.

This is a story about how far a dream can take you - and what remains of a person when all their bearings collapse.
