Two years ago, aliens showed up. Now Earth's been invited to join the Intergalactic Communications Network, a peaceful intergalactic alliance where species from across the universe gather to communicate, cooperate, and -apparently- confuse each other on a daily basis. Darling Hayes didn't volunteer. In fact, no one did. But that didn't stop her from being selected, packed off into space, and told she's now one of five official human ambassadors. She's underqualified, out of her depth, and doing her best not to offend anyone. Unfortunately, her assigned contact is a humanoid alien species known as the Kairlgire, a 7 foot 7 inches tall humanoid alien species, aggressively blunt, and absolutely certain she shouldn't be allowed to do anything on her own. He thinks she's fragile. She thinks he's a problem. Between translation mishaps, diplomatic near-disasters, and one too many arguments over what qualifies as "normal behaviour," Darling is starting to suspect that peaceful intergalactic cooperation might be a little more complicated than advertised. And significantly more awkward.

Malfoy knocks into Granger. Granger snarls. Malfoy mocks. Granger retorts. The end. Except... Something in his chest cracked open. His limbs moved before his pride could catch up. He dropped to one knee beside her and began to collect the books. Hermione blinked, her fingers pausing on the spine of her Arithmancy notes. Her eyes darted to his face, confused. "You're actually helping?" she muttered, suspiciously. Draco didn't look at her. He picked up the thickest book, brushing some dust from the edge. His fingers trembled. And then, voice rough, soft-like it had scraped itself raw before speaking-he said: "I-I'm sorry." Hermione froze completely. What? Draco cleared his throat, handed her the book, and added, voice faltering just enough to betray him: "I didn't mean to, I wasn't paying attention-sorry, mudblood." Triggered Warning- Gore, violence, mentions of attempted suicide, torture, mentions of rape.
