Having just settled in London after leaving Colorado and her family behind to start a new life, Harriet Winston is struggling to find her inspiration. A young writer suffering from writer's block, she spends her days in a tiny apartment above an antiquarian bookshop, tucked away in a damp alley in Notting Hill. Between the London fog, the silent nights, and the weight of her loneliness, she finds it difficult to make progress on her new novel. One rainy evening, while exploring the bookshop's forbidden back rooms, Harriet discovers a strange book: a brown leather-bound volume, without a title or author. The pages look centuries old... yet some sentences appear as if they were written just moments before. Intrigued, she quickly discovers a date written in ink: 1888. At that time, the book belonged to Nathaniel Ashcroft, a mysterious young man living in Victorian London. Cultured, solitary, and passionate about writing, Nathaniel uses this notebook to recount the unsettling events shaking the city: disappearances, secrets of powerful families, and a presence he claims to feel following him through the dark streets of Whitechapel. But Harriet soon understands something impossible: when she writes in the book, Nathaniel can reply... despite the 138 years that separate them. Through their correspondence, a relationship as fascinating as it is dangerous develops. As Harriet gradually uncovers the buried secrets of 1888 London, she realizes that certain events of the past seem to be altering her present. And the closer she gets to Nathaniel, the more one question obsesses her: does the book merely allow them to communicate... or does it seek to unite two destinies that should never have crossed paths?
