Before I can think about the consequences, I blurt out, "I'll be your Sacrifice."
Everyone in the room stops what they're doing to watch. It's an honor to be Sacrificed, but that doesn't mean anyone wants to be. Oblivious to the gawking crowd, the prince waits a full minute before he answers. "That's not how it works."
"Then make it work."
To my chagrin, he flashes those white teeth in a smile. "I think I'll keep you alive. You have more to accomplish. I believe you'll make a great contestant."
My heart plummets. He's going to make me fight. Fear surges from deep within, making me irrational and-for some reason I can't fathom-angry. "Go to hell," I snap.
There are a few gasps throughout the room. He could make my death slow and painful for speaking to him that way. It only makes his smile stretch. "In case you hadn't noticed, we're already here, angel."
Angel. He hurls the word like an insult. As if I fell a long way to get to where I am. Guess he's not too far off the mark. A week ago I was in the safety of my home with my father. Now I'm a runner, a traitor in the pits of hell.
