Vanessa Ortega Alvarez had learned two things before she was old enough to read.

Her father often said both lessons in the same sentence.

She could still remember sitting at the enormous dining table in their Valencia estate when she was seven years old, her legs dangling far above the marble floor. Alejandro Ortega Alvarez, one of the most feared men in Spain, sat at the head of the table like a king upon a throne.

His dark eyes had swept over everyone present.

"Respect can be requested," he had said.

Then he looked directly at her.
