Annabelle Anderson finds a new project every summer. She doesn't have many friends other than her two best friends but they go away with their families during summer break. Annie doesn't. So every year she finds something new to work on, last year it was stray dogs. This year, the missing kids. But there are some complications, like her new boyfriend Henry Bowers who isn't very happy with her choice of activity, a group of thirteen year olds who have a lot of thoughts about her and who she made her boyfriend, and strange nightmares and frightening daydreams. The worst of all these things is the discovery of something gross and odd lurking in the dark sewers.
