Feudal Japan, 17th century. In the fief of Midori Tani, the daimyo Denzo raises taxes to 20% and crushes anyone who can't pay.

When a rice merchant is butchered in front of his wife and son, the villagers decide they've had enough. They write a letter of protest. Denzo burns it before the messenger's eyes.
