Prince Kryos of Aethelgard survives the fiery destruction of his kingdom by the Scorched Covenant, a theocracy that worships fire. Fleeing through ancient catacombs, he reaches the Frostveil Wastes and descends into a crevasse where he merges with the Heart of Winter, an ancient, conscious force of absolute cold. Transformed into a being of black obsidian skin, glowing blue eyes, and perpetual frost, he abandons his old name and becomes the Ice King. Returning to his ruined homeland, he systematically annihilates the Covenant, freezes those who oppose him, and builds a frozen domain called the Frozen Reach, ruling from a citadel of ice on a throne of enchanted frost. Though he suppresses his memories and hides his face beneath a hood and a jagged ice crown, remnants of his former self-love, grief, and compassion-occasionally surface, revealing the inner conflict between the monster he has become and the man he once was.

The Ice King learns of the Prisoner of Ember, a fiery elemental deity chained beneath the Glass Desert, whose power grows in response to the expanding cold. Realizing he must neutralize this counterforce, he constructs a vast vault and lures the Prisoner into a climactic battle across the Glass Desert and northern tundra. After a devastating duel, he traps the Prisoner within the vault, creating an eternal stalemate of ice and fire. Years later, a cosmic predator known as the Storm tears the entire Frozen Reach from its world and deposits it onto a strange, temperate island nexus-a battlefield for displaced warriors from countless realities. With his fortress and the imprisoned Prisoner intact but his power drained, the Ice King stands on his balcony, watching the first snow of his new reign fall, poised to continue his mission of cold order in an unknown, chaotic realm.
