Years ago, before he became Dauntless's ruthless leader, Eric was her best friend. Back in Erudite, they spent countless hours together, inseparable despite being complete opposites. But when Eric transferred factions, he left her behind without a word.
Now, during Tris Prior's initiation year, Eric acts as though he has never met her.
Quiet, anxious, and carrying scars from an abusive childhood, Elowen struggles to survive Dauntless's unforgiving training. While Eric publicly humiliates her, criticises her every mistake, and seems to hate her more than anyone else, strange things begin to happen. He appears whenever she's in danger. He notices things nobody else does. And beneath his cold exterior, he seems determined to make sure she survives-even if he refuses to explain why.
As old memories resurface and buried feelings begin to emerge, Elowen must decide whether the boy she once knew still exists beneath the ruthless Dauntless leader everyone fears.
