Eve has never had to wonder if she was meant to be great. With the kind of natural talent most athletes spend their entire careers chasing, she's spent years dominating the track, and learning to expect nothing less than perfection from herself. Confident, relentless, and fiercely competitive, Eve knows exactly where she belongs: at the top. Then Amber appears. Amber isn't supposed to be a threat. She's not the most naturally gifted athlete on the track, but what she lacks in genetics, she makes up for with something Eve can't understand and can't ignore: Discipline. She trains harder. She comes back stronger. And every time Eve thinks she's finally left her behind, Amber is there again, closing the gap. For the first time, Eve has someone chasing her. What begins as simple competition quickly becomes something far more consuming. Eve becomes obsessed with watching Amber improve, with finding the smallest weakness, the hundredth of a second she can exploit. The closer Amber gets, the more Eve's carefully controlled world begins to crack. Because somewhere between the races, the long hours at the track, and the moments neither of them can explain, their rivalry becomes something harder to name. And the girl Eve was determined to beat becomes the one person she can't seem to stop thinking about. On the track, there can only be one winner. But Eve is beginning to realize that losing to Amber might be the most dangerous thing that could ever happen to her.
