Six months have passed since the explosive coronation brawl where Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos ultimately defeated Maleficent and chose the path of Good. Yet, the initial triumph of their integration has completely evaporated, replaced by the suffocating reality of life within Auradon's elite. The relentless, unforgiving spotlight of being Princess Alexandra's high-profile girlfriends is rapidly pushing Mal past her limit. Trapped in a gilded cage of high-society expectations, she is drowning under the courts' constant scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Evie is consumed by a growing, anxious dread for Alex. The silver-haired princess has been fundamentally changed since that fateful day; she is plagued by severe insomnia and violent, recurring nightmares of a predatory, crimson-and-black energy that whispers in the dark, demanding she claim her rightful, sinister inheritance. Devastated but resolute, the remaining pair must cast aside their fears and concoct a desperate plan to infiltrate the dangerous slums of the Isle and bring Mal home. But as they embark on this rescue mission, time is rapidly running out; Alex must wage a silent, agonizing war against the volatile, hidden darkness aggressively clawing its way to the surface from deep within her own blood, and a certain someone makes matters even worse.
