Evermine - a Michael Jackson Fanfiction

"I should be happy for you," she whispered guiltily, lowering her gaze. Instead, she looked past him at the small house behind them and the yard where they had spent so much of their childhood. "I always thought we'd grow up here together," he replied wistfully.

Evermine.
Only Michael called her that.
Years ago, when he had first heard her full name, he hadn't understood it correctly.
And somehow Everline Brooks had become Evermine. "I like it. Evermine, because you'll always be my best friend," he had said.
And the nickname had stayed.

„Are you proposing to me?" she finally burst out amused, looking up at him with a small smile.
He frowned, offended because she was teasing him instead of taking it seriously.

"Michael, I don't think you should keep calling anymore. You have so much going on, and honestly... I just feel out of place right now."

"There it is again."
Bill grinned knowingly. He hadn't failed to notice that Michael had been carrying the invitation with him constantly ever since receiving it at Hayvenhurst shortly before their departure.

The young man swallowed.
As though he had spent a very long time rehearsing what he wanted to say and had forgotten all of it the moment he saw her.
Then, finally, he smiled. Small, careful and almost disbelieving.
"Hey, Evermine."

"Michael," she finally breathed. Her voice was filled with equal parts confusion and disbelief. "What the hell are you doing here?" He had grown. Not quite as tall as Jonas, but he still stood about half a head taller than she did.
