The boy next door

Lina had always believed that nothing exciting ever happened in Maple Street.

Every morning was the same. She woke up to her mother's voice calling her downstairs, rushed through breakfast, and walked to school with her headphones on. At seventeen, her life felt painfully ordinary.

Until the new family moved in next door.

Lina watched from her bedroom window as boxes were unloaded from a black truck. Then she saw him.

He looked about her age, wearing a faded hoodie and carrying three boxes at once. He had messy dark hair and an expression that made him seem distant from the world around him.

Their eyes met for a brief second.

Lina quickly stepped away from the window, her heart racing for reasons she couldn't explain.

The next morning, she almost bumped into him outside her gate.

"I'm so sorry," she said, nearly dropping her books.

"It's okay," he replied, his voice calm. "You must be my neighbor."

"I'm Lina."

"Noah."

There was an awkward silence before Noah glanced at the books in her hands.

"You like reading?" he asked.

"I love it."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Maybe Maple Street isn't as boring as people think."

For the first time in months, Lina found herself smiling on the walk to school.
