There is one simple rule with with Demon Deals: keep the object you are given during the Deal. That is your Contract. As long as you have it in your possession, you're safe. Lose it, and bad things happen.
Alyssa's parents made a Deal with a Shadow Demon before Alyssa was born so that they could be together and have her. The Demon made everything they wanted happen and more.
