17 years old girl named Martha Johnson soon to be 18 in 4 months is getting a huge chunk of what the real world like.  She lives in New York City,the big apple. She was raised in a somewhat wealthy family that was stable enough to get through the Great depression. Her kind hearted father was hurt from a  factory machine and later died from infections. As her grieving mother weeps because of the loss of her father. Then soon to be in debt because of the huge medical bill left from her father’s death. Martha takes a stand, and doesn’t finish school. Started working in a clothing factory to be able to feed her mother, and younger sister and to pay off for her father’s debt.
The factory wasn’t fair at all men were being paid more than women when they were working less. Martha later on started to see that there is more out there. Then her changing the threads for the machines (also life threatening) and still being paid less when she worked extensive hours. She wanted to do more than that. But still be able to support her family .Martha goes through decisions that could lead to huge conflict. Will Martha leave the factory to get the education she needs to get a better job? Or be miserable in the factory and struggle to support her family?
