Houdini's Camera

In an old box inside her grandmother's attic, a broken Polaroid camera was found. Carved onto the lid of the box was a single word: "Houdini." Youssef didn't understand why he repaired a camera he knew absolutely nothing about. And Hams didn't understand why she felt a sudden chill of fear the first time he raised it toward her.
​But the camera worked.
​And Youssef took six pictures. Six moments from a life that seemed perfectly ordinary: Hams asleep in their bed, Hams laughing in the garden, Hams wrapping her hands around a coffee mug, Hams reading, the two of them together in front of the mirror, and finally, Hams in the hospital, smiling her very last smile.
​Then, Hams died.
​A week after the funeral, while Youssef was drowning in grief, a drop of his blood fell onto one of the photographs. Suddenly, he found himself inside the exact moment the picture was taken. She was alive. He was there. Everything was real.
​But he cannot stay. The moment he takes the picture again, he is pulled back to his dark present. And the rule is absolute: he cannot change a single thing.
​Except... the pictures have begun to change. Every time he visits her, her features look different. It is as if she can feel him. As if she knows.
​And then, he finds a picture he never took-a photo of him asleep, a photo taken by Hams...
