Wren Calloway, a 24-year-old lighthouse keeper's daughter in a near-future Pacific Northwest, is captured when an alien consciousness called the Choir invades her coast. The Choir travels as microscopic spores and bonds to human hosts, gradually erasing the original mind - a process called Settling.

Wren refuses to be erased.

Instead of fading, she persists inside her own body alongside the alien strand now calling itself Mira Ashlight - and the two become an uneasy alliance. To save her younger brother Sam from the same fate, Wren and Mira must outwit the cold, zealous harbor master Cantor Vell, work with a resistance fighter named Joaquin Reyes who once came to kill her, and find a third option that neither human nor Choir doctrine has ever considered: a bond built on consent instead of conquest.
