The year is 1979 and Michael Jackson just hit it big with his new album Off The Wall. But what happens when a random thunder storm sends him to the year 2026, behind trash cans? He's twenty-one, sporting his iconic afro, platform shoes, and a sequined vest, clutching a portable cassette player like it's a lifeline. The air smells like ozone and asphalt, and the sky above Los Angeles looks nothing like the one he left behind, skyscrapers pierce the clouds with neon lights, and strange metal carriages zoom by without horses or drivers. Panicked, disoriented, and hiding behind a row of industrial bins in an alleyway, he's discovered by twenty-year-old Lyra. With her bright braids, oversized headphones around her neck, and a smartphone glowing in her hand, Lyra is just taking out the trash when she finds a global icon from four decades in the past shaking in the dark. Convinced she's either dreaming or hallucinating, Lyra quickly realizes this isn't an elaborate prank or a very dedicated impersonator, the man is genuinely wearing clothes from a museum exhibit and speaking with a 1970s cadence. Now, she has to smuggle a twenty-one-year-old Michael Jackson into her apartment, teach him what the internet is, and figure out how to send him home before the timeline shatters completely.
