The world is dying. Earth's resources have been depleted, and humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. In desperation, the people pray and an angel answers.

Uriel descends from Heaven to offer salvation. But humanity does not embrace him.

The being offers him instructions on how to cage an angel, how to harness its holy energy as an infinite power source. Ernstmann builds the Angel Engine in the Second Tower of Babel. Uriel is betrayed, captured, and strapped into the machine, his divinity drained to fuel humanity's survival.

But not everyone at the Second Tower is complicit.

Zoya Volkova is a quiet scientist who works with bacteria and flowers, refusing to experiment on living beings. She is broken,a survivor of a lifetime of sexual abuse, invisible in her chaotic Russian family, drowning in depression and anxiety. She joined the Angel Engine Initiative hoping to do good. Instead, she discovered a suffering angel.

Elara Vance is a biomechanical engineer with a sharp tongue and a wall of cynicism. She fled her conservative Texas hometown after her family subjected her to conversion therapy for being a lesbian. Science became her refuge-cold, logical, undeniable. At the AEI, she maintains the machinery that keeps Uriel imprisoned. She hates what she does, but she has nowhere else to go.

They are best friends. Sisters in trauma. Each other's only safe space in a place of horror.

And then Zoya meets Uriel.

She speaks to him softly. She asks his permission. She sneaks him snacks. She treats him like a person, not a battery. And in return, he offers her something she has never known: unconditional love. He tells her she is not dirty. She is not a sinner. She is blameless.
