Chai is the foal of the famous stayer Manhattan Café, from the golden generation, who has a dream of becoming a great mile racer like one of its legendary members, the Queen of the Mile, Daiwa Scarlet. She dreams of entering Tracen Academy where her beautiful life can begin, but no trajectory is certain in the high stakes, often class-dependant world of racing. Meanwhile, Agnes Tachyon, a tragedy of the sport in the fore of everyone's minds, spends her days housebound, drinking vodka and wine, binging academic journals and making questionable scientific contributions. She has closed the door on everybody, content in her own isolation and depressant-hazed misery, until the day she receives a certain phone call. An old, dear friend makes a sudden meaningful request to her. "Please train my daughter."
