Alyssa Reid moves away after a tragic accident that killed her sister, Evelyn Reid. She starts a new life in Chicago with her dog, Max, living in a tiny apartment and working as a waitress at a fancy restaurant. There, she meets Damon Blackwell, who offers her $5 million to become his fake fiancée. She agrees, but at a cost she does not fully understand.

She later discovers his family is involved in the mafia when she is kidnapped. After she is rescued, she tells Damon she no longer wants the money and walks away from him.
