Mirror

Something I wrote for a challenge prompt in a comment for @justwriteit, just with all the details that I had to trim out to keep from writing an entire chapter. It had basically become a one-shot rather than just a short response, so this is the full thing.

The prompt: Write a scene where a character finds something they were never supposed to see. It could be a letter, a voicemail, a hidden photo, an unfinished draft, or a text message. The important part is the reaction. What changes in that moment? What do they do with what they now know?

My idea: They were sent to investigate a mysterious tower that no one knows who built it, but they were never meant to find the locked door to a hidden room. The thing they find inside is the "something they were never supposed to see."

I'm pretty sure I didn't follow that prompt to the letter, but after some thought, trying to figure out which character(s) of mine I could use that would fit it, this was what I came up with in the moment.
