Vespera Yaxley was born on 3 October 1980 at Yaxley Manor in Northumberland, England. Just a few months after her birth, her parents, both loyal Death Eaters, were ordered by Voldemort to carry out an important mission. Choosing to protect their infant daughter instead of obeying him, they abandoned the task and were executed for their betrayal. Left orphaned, Vespera was placed into the care of Andromeda Tonks and Ted Tonks, who raised her as one of their own alongside their daughter, Nymphadora Tonks.

Benjamin Dolohov was born on 17 March 1980 in London, England, to Antonin Dolohov, a Death Eater, and Sarah Bennett, a Muggle woman. When Voldemort discovered that Antonin had married a Muggle and had a child with her, he saw it as an act of betrayal against his cause. Sarah was killed as punishment for going against his beliefs, leaving Benjamin without his mother. However, Antonin refused to abandon his son and chose to raise Benjamin himself, despite the danger it placed them both in. Growing up with a father who had once followed Voldemort but still loved him shaped Benjamin's understanding of the choices people made during the war.

Vespera Yaxley and Benjamin Dolohov first met during their first year at Hogwarts in Potions class. Despite both carrying the weight of their families' pasts, their meeting was far from peaceful. When Benjamin discovered that Vespera was the daughter of two Death Eaters who had betrayed Voldemort by choosing their daughter over him, he saw their actions as weakness rather than love. He accused her parents of being blood traitors for abandoning their beliefs, unaware of the sacrifice they had made for her. Vespera, refusing to let her parents' final choice be insulted, quickly grew resentful of Benjamin and the two became rivals. Their arguments continued throughout their first years at Hogwarts, each believing the other misunderstood what it meant to come from a family connected to Voldemort's war.
