Alice wakes up in the box with no memory, just like the rest.
'The rest' meaning she was not alone. She was surrounded by a group of strange boys, and despite having no memory, Alice knows that she is meant to save them from the maze.
Along the way she must choose who she loves most between two of the boys, Thomas, the runner who begins to like her immediately, and Newt, the mysterious British boy who seems to remember her.
