The chill of the autumn night seeped into Raylene's bones, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat of the ballroom she'd just fled. Her midnight-blue silk gown, once a masterpiece of elegance, was now a tattered testament to her desperate escape. A thorny branch had snagged the delicate fabric, ripping a jagged tear across her thigh, and the once-lustrous material was smeared with earth and grime. Her silver eyes, usually cool and composed, now darted with a frantic energy, reflecting the moonlight filtering through the dense canopy of pine trees. Each breath hitched in her throat, a desperate prayer that the pounding of her heart wouldn't betray her presence. Behind her, a rustle of leaves, heavy and deliberate, sent a fresh wave of terror through her. She didn't need to turn to know who it was. The scent of pine and something else, something wild and possessive, filled the air. Fabian. His presence was a palpable force, a predator stalking its prey. He hadn't been in the ballroom, no, he was the reason she was in this cursed forest to begin with.
