Anaïs de Bourbon was born into the French royal family in 1770, destined for a life of privilege and prestige.

But one terrible night, the ancient vampire Magnus abducted her from her bedchamber and imprisoned her within his secluded lair. Night after night, for months without end, he drained her blood again and again, until the endless cycle of agony blurred together and she could no longer remember how much time had passed.

Finally, one haunting night, Magnus grows weary of his hollow immortal existence and chooses to surrender himself to the flames. But instead of ending Anaïs's suffering, he condemns her to the very fate he can no longer bear, turning her into a vampire.

He drains Anaïs to the brink of death before forcing her to drink his blood, condemning her to the same immortal curse. As Magnus throws himself into the flames, he leaves her with a final, haunting farewell:

"Mon enfant noire, mon amour, ma petite..."
("My dark child, my love, my little one...")

Those words mark the beginning of Anaïs's agonizing transformation into a creature of the night.

For years she wanders the world alone, struggling with the monstrous hunger that now defines her existence. Her solitude finally ends when she encounters Lestat, another of Magnus's fledgling vampires. That fateful meeting eventually leads her to the one who will become the great love of her immortal life: Armand, the fledgling of Marius de Romanus.
