Naven Blackvale really believes he's an average sixteen-year-old teenager seeking a job, but he struggles with a tormented past. For mages-magical humans-they were free to practice their magic and powers openly to norms-ordinary humans. However war devastated the mages' hopes. Now magic is being restricted, mages want freedom, and Dawning is being targeted by monstrous beings known as malefics.  

 When a series of bad events lead to one of Naven's close ones being abducted by a dangerous malefic, Naven suddenly receives help from a group of young magihunters-trained to handle the malefics-known as the Shadowhawks. As he embarks on a mission to save his missing friend, Naven will uncover secrets people inside Dawning and outside have tried to hide. And as the clues get bigger, the mystery of Naven's past will get harder to solve. The dark forces he and the Shadowhawks face will be tougher to stop. And everyone else Naven cares about could be in great peril.
