Saul Berenson has run analysts through the CIA's Counterterrorism Center for twenty years, and none of them have unsettled him quite like the junior hire who arrived that October, fourteen months into a clean record, no field experience, and somehow already three steps ahead of Abu Nazir's network. Franklin Ingham reads cable traffic like he's seen the ending, and vanishes for the length of a bathroom break into a room Saul will never see: bare concrete, a bolted table, two chairs, where a silent faculty lets him summon a Ghost of Brody and interrogate it until its own lies crack. Every session buys foresight and drains a body that was failing long before he arrived: he dry-heaves on the tile floor afterward, his hands won't stop shaking for an hour, and his mind swings without warning from four-a.m. brilliance to days he can't leave the bed. Saul starts routing the sensitive files to him anyway, because the analysis is too good to ignore, and quietly begins keeping a private file of his own. Franklin cannot say why he's right so often, only that he is, and that the bill for being right keeps climbing faster than anyone near him has noticed.
