The room was silent except for the rain tapping against the windows.
Amora stood frozen near the door, her breathing uneven, her fingers trembling around the folder she'd dropped onto the floor.
Photographs spilled across the hardwood.
Dozens of them.
Some of her in her home.
Some she remembered being taken.
Some...
She'd never realized anyone was there to take.
Jayden didn't move. She couldn't. Amora slowly looked up.
Her eyes were full of tears. "...How long?"
Jayden swallowed.
"Lovie..."
"Don't."
The single word broke something inside her. "...Just tell me."
Jayden's voice barely existed. "Almost two years.."
Amora laughed. It wasn't a happy laugh. It was the sound someone makes when the truth is too impossible to believe.
"Years?" she whispered. "You knew me before I knew your name."
Jayden had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
Not once had she imagined losing the ability to speak.
Because there was nothing she could say that would give Amora her life back.
Or the choice she'd taken from her.
