The room was silent except for the rain tapping against the windows.

Amora stood frozen near the door, her breathing uneven, her fingers trembling around the folder she'd dropped onto the floor.

Jayden didn't move. She couldn't. Amora slowly looked up.

Her eyes were full of tears. "...How long?"

The single word broke something inside her. "...Just tell me."

Jayden's voice barely existed. "Almost two years.."

Amora laughed. It wasn't a happy laugh. It was the sound someone makes when the truth is too impossible to believe.

"Years?" she whispered. "You knew me before I knew your name."
