Surprise Punk is not a sub genre per se, but rather a way to describe a certain type of story breaking with traditional tropes. It can be set at any point in history, the future, or a hitherto undiscovered dimension, and Surprise Punk stories will overlap with other sub-genres. Their key element is, surprise-surprise, surprise. From the Neanderthal who invents electricity instead of fire, the scientist who, rather than creating a new soft drink comes up with a formula for faster-than-light travel, or the girl who finds out her math teacher is an alien, everything goes - and more.

It's been almost a hundred years since Earth's civilizations fell, leaving only ruins and memories. Long before the collapse, they began taking humans, but now, everyone knows who they are and they fear them. The few who manage to return from their captivity tell stories of how these creatures treat humans like animals or children, tending to them like pets or slaves. The aliens pity these "little creatures"-they just don't want to leave their home, but Earth is falling apart at the seams, and they are determined to take the stubborn little humans to the safety of one of the mother planets. No matter the cost.
