Wonder

Whitechapel, London, 1888.

A little girl named Mariam sits alone on a bench, hungry, cold, and trying not to cry. She has learned that strangers are dangerous, kindness is rare, and no one comes looking for children like her.

Then a gentleman sits beside her.

He is calm. Elegant. Soft-spoken. Almost kind.

But he knows her name.

As the fog settles over Whitechapel and gaslight flickers in the street, Mariam finds herself speaking to someone unlike anyone she has ever met - someone who sees her clearly, listens without turning away, and gives her one brief moment of wonder in a life that has offered her very little.
