Since entering the service of Downton Abbey in 1910, Thomas has survived through ambition, manipulation, and a razor-sharp wit. The only person to discover his secret is Downton's new lady's maid, Phyllis Baxter. Newly arrived to replace O'Brien, Baxter initially earns nothing but Thomas's suspicion and hostility. Expecting judgment or blackmail, he lashes out at her. Instead, she responds with quiet compassion. Refusing to abandon him, Baxter persuades Thomas to seek help from Doctor Clarkson, who treats the poisoning caused by the injections and helps nurse him back to health.

As Thomas slowly recovers, an unexpected friendship blossoms between two people who know what it means to carry painful secrets and live under the weight of past mistakes.
