Summer never started in June.
It started with him.

With white sand that looked like powdered sugar beneath their feet, the sun melting behind Pier 60, and the feeling that the world somehow became lighter there.

Aisha was eight when she met Julian. She had no idea that one simple conversation would stay with her for years, or that every summer would become an unspoken promise. That no matter how much they changed during the year, they would always find their way back to the same stretch of beach, where everything felt untouched by time.

At thirteen, the pier became their secret place.

At sixteen, they no longer needed words.

Bonfires. Polaroids. Bicycles left in the sand. Sunsets painted in shades of pink and gold. Whenever someone asked what they were, they always answered, *"Friends."* But there was always that brief pause first.

Every summer ended the same way.

Julian left with salt still clinging to his skin.

Aisha stayed behind with the taste of their last embrace lingering on her lips.
