Melody Without Words

She told him kpop was a formula. He wrote half the songs she was talking about.

The melody arrived out of nowhere. Four rising notes over a bowl of cereal, looping in her head like a question with no answer.

Aria can sing it perfectly. She can hear exactly where every note wants to go. What she can't do is write the words. Not in English, the language she's fluent in. Not in Korean, the language she's spent nine years refusing to learn.

Because lyrics require honesty. And honesty is the one thing she hasn't been able to afford since her father, and his saxophone, went quiet.

Then a stranger in a black mask overhears her humming in a studio and says the melody sounds like a question.

He offers to help her answer it.

He never mentions what he does for a living.
