Lucy Leer suddenly finds herself in a place she has never seen before with no memory of how she got there or who she was before she arrived. The only thing she knows is what the smiling residents tell her: she has been welcomed into the Happy Society, the greatest place on Earth. The Happy Society is everything people could ever dream of. There is no money, no hunger, no poverty, and no struggling to make ends meet. Every home is provided, every meal is fresh, and every person is encouraged to pursue what they truly love. Jobs aren't obligations-they're passions. Artists are given endless inspiration, musicians receive every resource they need to perfect their craft, and dreamers are celebrated instead of overlooked. The Society believes that when people are supported, they become the very best versions of themselves. Everywhere Lucy looks, she sees colorful neighborhoods, blooming gardens in every season, laughter in the streets, and people who genuinely seem happy. To Lucy, it feels like paradise. She quickly settles into her new life, meeting her roommates, learning the Society's unusual rules, and embracing the warmth of a community that seems to care about everyone. Then the little things begin. A conversation stops the moment Lucy walks into the room. Someone smiles just a little too long after asking if she's happy. A neighbor she spoke with yesterday is suddenly gone, and no one remembers they ever existed. Questions are met with cheerful laughter instead of answers, and every uneasy feeling is dismissed with the same comforting response: *You're just adjusting.* As the days pass, fragments of Lucy's memory begin returning in brief, unsettling flashes. Faces she can't place appear in her dreams. Faces she can't place appear in her dreams. Places she's certain she's never visited somehow feel familiar. The more she remembers, the harder it becomes to ignore the feeling that something about the Happy Society isn't quite right.
