Two flames burn the same | Gwayne Hightower

The halls of the Red Keep have always been a cage of gilded ambition, but for Aella Targaryen, daughter of the Rogue Prince and the Lady of Runestone, they were a sanctuary-a place where she learned to navigate the treacherous currents of the court. Raised alongside her cousin Rhaenyra, Aella was a shadow in the throne room, a girl sired by a man who treated her existence as a transactional burden abandoned by her mother. To the court, she was the forgotten Targaryen; to her father, Daemon, she was a reminder of a marriage he loathed.

The fragile peace of the Red Keep shattered with the death of Queen Aemma and the subsequent elevation of Alicent Hightower to the Iron Throne. As the years bled into a decade of festering resentment and political maneuvering, Otto Hightower's influence reached its zenith, he orchestrates a match that feels like a final, calculated insult to Daemon: he proposes a marriage between his eldest son, Ser Gwayne Hightower, and Aella.

Gwayne is the embodiment of Oldtown excellence-disciplined, formidable, and icy. Ten years her senior, he approaches the union not with romantic fervor, but with the duty of a man loyal to his father's house.

The marriage begins in frigid silence. She views the marriage as a prison sentence, a tool for Otto to spite Daemon, and she treats Gwayne with the sharp, defensive wit of a woman expecting betrayal.

However, the reality of life in the Hightower household-far from the suffocating politics of the capital-begins to chip away at the facade. As they navigate the dangerous waters of a kingdom on the brink of civil war, the pair must decide if their union is merely a political footnote in their fathers' power struggles, or the beginning of an unexpected, profound loyalty that defies the bloodlines defining them.
